03 / Our Story

A small bureauof hill guides,walkers & mountains.

Horizon was founded on a mountainside near the Iveragh Peninsula in 2009. We still run it the same way — small team, deep knowledge of the ridges, and a stubborn belief that the best walks happen above the treeline.

Seventeen years ago we set out to build a different kind of walking company — one that would treat the mountains of the west like a proper field operation, not a product. Ten flagship mountain routes later, the core of the team is still the same three people who started it: a hill guide raised on the Maumturks, a cook who spent decades in mountain bothies, and a logistics obsessive who grew up herding sheep on Benbaun.

We still believe in the quiet kind of ambition. A good mountain walk is mostly uneventful on the surface — clean boots, camp made, dinner on time — which frees walkers to notice the weather coming off the Atlantic, the strangers on a ridge, the long view across three counties from a cairn. The drama is supposed to happen on the hill, not in the itinerary.

Every route we run has been walked by one of us, in every season, usually several times. If we don't love a mountain, we don't sell it. And when a summit path erodes or a bothy closes, we go back out and find a new ridge before the next group arrives.

2009

The Ridge Year

Founded on the slopes of the Iveragh Peninsula with a single Kerry Way itinerary and a fax machine that worked when the weather held.

2013

First Hundred

Hit 100 mountain walks completed. Added the Maumturks and the Twelve Bens that same summer.

2017

Field Bureau

Rebranded as a field bureau — full-time hill guides, in-house mountain logistics, no franchise model.

2021

The Quiet Season

Ran private-only mountain walks while most outfits shut down. Gained our best high-altitude cook in the process.

2026

Expedition N° 207

Still walking every ridge before selling it. Still reading the weather from a mountain camp.
